Perugia

Perugia has always been the capital of Umbria.  It is situated on a panoramic hill.  The historic centre can be reached by a modern system of escalators. 
A real surprise for those who have not yet visited; architectural evidence from all ages exists here.  From the medieval ages to modern times, all phases of history blend together her.

 
IN HALF A DAY
 
 

 
Rocca Paolina: built by Pope Paul III, this military fortress was constructed in 1543.  It served as a symbol of Papal rule.  Today, it functions as an entrance to the historic center.  Mostly destroyed in the 19th Century, it has been reconstructed with a modern escalator system and serves as an exhibition hall for cultural events and art exhibits.  

Fontana Maggiore and Palazzo dei Priori
: these architectural and sculptural master pieces represent the civic glory of the golden age of Perugia.  

Arco Etrusco: the well preserved entrance gate into the Etruscan city is a must see site.  

 

 
WITH A LITTLE BIT MORE TIME
 

Galleria Nazionale dell’Umbria: a rich collection of artworks from the 13th to 17th centuries.  Works from Perugino, Pintoricchio, Piero della Francesca, and Beato Angelico are among the collection.

Collegio del Cambio: the museum itself is painted with frescoes by Perugino.

Tempio di Sant’Angelo: erected in the 6th century on the remains of a Roman temple, this church emanates a unique atmosphere.  

Museo Archeologico:  contains an important collection of urns, sarcophaguses, and burial offerings fro the Etruscan period.  The tomb of Cai Cutu is of extraordinary importance.  

Basilica di San Pietro
: the most important Benedictine abbey in Umbria with a rich art gallery.  The adjacent medieval garden is also worth exploring.
